Remote-controlled and autonomous mowing systems are drawing growing interest from roadside maintenance crews and utility vegetation managers.
The technology allows operators to control mowers from a safe distance or follow pre-set routes, addressing key challenges such as operator safety near traffic and steep slopes, labor shortages, and difficult terrain access.
At recent field demonstrations, remote-operated mowers cleared overgrown embankments while operators stood far from hazards. Utility companies are also evaluating the technology for vegetation management along transmission corridors, including wetlands and rocky areas.
Falling sensor costs and improved wireless communication are making these systems more practical. Several manufacturers now offer remote-controlled commercial mowers, with some developing fully autonomous units.
Challenges remain, including high upfront costs, limited battery runtime, and regulatory questions. Nevertheless, industry interest continues to grow, with field trials underway in several states.
"We're still in the early adopter phase," one equipment specialist said. "But in five to ten years, remote and autonomous mowing will be a standard part of the toolkit."
