The water pump is a critical component of a road roller; the condition of this pump directly impacts compaction quality, as well as the progress and efficiency of construction operations. In recent years, malfunctions within water spraying systems have remained persistently high and show an upward trend, directly compromising the road roller's compaction performance.
Causes of Water Pump Leaks in Road Rollers
Improper Installation: If the mechanical seal seat assembly is not seated correctly during pump installation, continuous leakage will result. Additionally, failure to thoroughly clean the mating surfaces between the pump body and the pump cover when replacing the water-retaining ring can prevent proper seating and sealing, thereby causing the pump to leak.
Component Wear and Aging: In older machinery, wear, corrosion, and material degradation within the internal components of the mechanical seal are common causes of water pump leakage. Furthermore, in newly installed pumps, minor leakage may occur because the phenolic sealing ring and the cast-iron bushing have not yet fully "seated" or broken in against each other.
Harsh Operating Environments: The demanding conditions under which construction machinery operates can lead to uneven wear between the phenolic sealing ring and the bushing surface. Additionally, prolonged immersion in water can cause the seal's spring to corrode and lose its tension, which can also result in leakage.
Freezing Damage: Failure to drain the cooling system-or draining it incompletely-during winter, as well as draining the system while the engine temperature is still excessively high (causing residual water vapor to condense and freeze), can lead to the pump body cracking due to freezing expansion, thereby causing leakage.

Emergency Remedial Measures
If a water pump leak is detected while the engine is currently running, do *not* shut down the engine immediately. Instead, maintain a stable engine speed while simultaneously adding water to and draining water from the cooling system to gradually lower the engine temperature. Drive the machine slowly and for a short distance to a safe, sheltered location before proceeding with repairs.
It is not uncommon for the mechanical seal of the water pump to leak while construction machinery is traveling or actively operating. In all such instances, it is crucial to ensure that the sealing face of the mechanical seal and the corresponding contact surface on the pump body are properly lapped (ground smooth) to guarantee effective sealing performance.
